Provides indirect patient care in the Emergency Department. Meets the communication needs of the patient/family, departmental staff and medical staff. Implements directions from physicians and nursing staff.

- Obtains patient demographic and health insurance information.
- Assembles patient charts; retrieves patient charts if they are a return patient.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, coworkers and physicians.
- Responsible for accepting referrals from a physician’s office and pre-admitting these patients.
- Responsible for obtaining authorization and verifying insurance eligibility.
- Responsible for interviewing patients or their representative, where admission is unscheduled, for obtaining personal information or verifying information already on file, including emergency numbers and insurance information.
- Provides information to the patient/representative about billing, complaint process, patient rights, HIPAA and visiting hours. Distributes hospital specific literature.
- Responsible for insuring that a patient’s valuables are taken home by a family member or secured in the safe.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to supervisor, nurse managers, coworkers and physicians.
- Responsible for knowing hospital policies and being familiar with hospital services that are available.
- Prepares medical records for new admissions and discharged patients. Checks charts for completeness/deficiencies.
- Logs all patients in the electronic logbooks.
- Demonstrates an ability to float to different patient care units and function effectively in different, stressful situations.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
